okay...just type in the URL to your avatar if it's already online.  for example, this  picture....if you right click over it and choose properties, you'll see it's from http://www.electrotank.com/images/gameIcons/gi_mg.gif and its dimensions are 41x41.  Just type all that stuff in.

But...if you have an avatar you'd like to use that's not on the web already, you'll have to upload it to the internet somehow.  then follow the same instructions.  i have plenty of free webspace, so if you'd like to e-mail me it, i'll be happy to do it for you.    you cannot upload avatars directly to this forum, unfortunately.  it's a feature i didn't find out about until it was too late.  but here's a couple sites that offer free webspace.  http://www.tripod.lycos.com/ ; Yahoo! photos or briefcase is a good spot, great for the beginner - http://briefcase.yahoo.com/ or http://photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos  ; then there's ripway, free online file storage:  http://www.ripway.com/index.asp ; and there's http://members.freewebs.com/ which i use for many of the uploaded shots you see in this forum (as long as the pic is formatted to .png)    and there's plenty of others you can pick from here:  http://www.free-webhosts.com/
