I was wondering if any of our members were affected by last years blackout. Some 50 million Canadians and Americans were without power, some for up to 72 hours. I remember it well... As the first anniversary approaches, I was shocked to find out that it could very well happen again, at any time. We increasingly suck back the power on an already outdated and over-burdened grid...

On August 14, 2003 a power surge originating in the Ohio valley created a massive blackout affecting over 50 million U.S. and Canadian people. The surge created a cascading drain on the power grid that is shared by both countries. The "lights went out" from Ohio to Maine and from Ontario thru Quebec for varying times for as little as 5 hours to as much as 72.
I am amazed that you didn't hear about this, for when the lights dimmed in NYC, a temporary panic ensued. Understandable, considering the events of two years previous.
